1,500 THIRD GRADERS TO DESCEND ON SPIVA

3rd gradersMore than 1,500 third graders from four school districts and two private schools will take part in gallery and hands-on art experiences when Spiva Center for the Arts kicks off its annual Third Grade Field Trips program on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Each week day through Friday, Feb. 20, students from a different school will trek to the center to take part in the program. It will include 20 schools from Joplin, Carthage, Webb City and Carl Junction school districts, plus Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School and St. Mary’s Elementary School, both in Joplin.

Students will take part in gallery education while exploring the Main Gallery exhibit, The Landscape Revisited, before beginning hands-on art projects in Spiva classrooms. Each student will create an individual landscape painting that will become part of a collaborative mural. The mural will reflect a Gustav Klimpt style landscape with starry skies and mystical trees. The mural will be on display as it evolves and will eventually grow to span the four walls of Spiva’s Upstairs Gallery.

The 2015 Third Grade Field Trips are made possible by grants from the General Mills Foundation and the Carthage R-9 Alumni Association Foundation.
