First Thursday ArtWalk in Historic Downtown Joplin

1st Thursday T SHIRT Logo 300dpi

ArtWalk has moved to the First Thursday of every month! But Art Zone will remain a significant part of Third Thursday. First Thursday will debut on July 2, 5:30–8:30pm. Organizers intend for First Thursdays to be a sophisticated, yet festive event, for area artists, as well as patrons of the arts…past, present and future! Participating artists will be located inside various venues along with live acoustic music. Patrons are encouraged to “walk the art,” through historic downtown Joplin – from Spiva Center For the Arts at Third and Wall, to Virginia Street with Cleo’s Framing and Design at Artistic Alley – and many spots in-between. “Fine Art and Art at its Finest” is the motto for this event. Dozens of artists will be showing or demonstrating their artistic process. All art will be for sale. For more information and updates of participating artists/venues, visit their Facebook page or email firstthursdayartwalkjoplin@gmail.com.

Participating Venues: Spiva Center for the Arts, Post Memorial Art Reference Library, Joplin Ave. Coffee Company, RSVPaint, Ron Erwin Photography, M&M Bistro Art Gallery, Blacklist Ink, MSSU Focal Point Gallery, Cleo’s Framing (joining in August), and many other businesses, including Upstairs Boutique, Carmen’s Apples, and the 511 Main building. Other “pop-up” galleries will join month-to-month.

Next Musical Production at Joplin Little Theatre – Forever Plaid

On February 9, 1964, en route to pick up their custom-made plaid tuxedos, four young singers were driving and rehearsing in their cherry red 1954 Mercury convertible when they were slammed broadside by a school bus filled with eager young teens. The teens were on their way to witness the Beatles make their US television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show and miraculously escaped injury. The members of Forever Plaid were killed instantly. It was at that moment when their careers and lives ended, that the story of “Forever Plaid” begins…

foreverplaidcast

This popular four-part harmony musical Forever Plaid will be reprised this July at JLT. It was performed by the Ninth Hour Quartet in 2008 as a two night sold-out JLT fundraiser. Co-Directors Carolyn McGowan and Bill Perry decided that the talent was available to present this as a full run for the 2015 summer show. Due to intricate harmony requiring intense vocal rehearsals, early auditions were held in March. The cast includes Tyler Burkhart, Trey Burkhart, Forrest Bunter and Tanner Munson. Matthew Holt will be serving as Vocal Director, Clint Newby as Instrumental Director and Angela Lowe will be choreographing. Musical Selections include Three Coins in the Fountain, Gotta Be This or That, Undecided, Moments to Remember, Crazy ‘Bout Ya Baby, No, Not Much, Perfidia, Cry, Sixteen Tons, Chain Gang, Catch a Falling Star, Day-O Kingston Market, Jamaica Farwell, Matilda, Heart and Soul, Lady of Spain, Scotland the Brave, Shangri-La, Rags to Riches, a Beatles medley and Love is a Many Splendored Thing.

Show dates are July 8–12 and tickets are available now!

Tickets:
$13 – General
$11 – Seniors/Students
$5   – Children (Under 12)
