Artist Statement: Rise of the Phoenix is a triptych mural created by artist Trent Tally in April of 2013. Tally designed, constructed, and installed this piece of public art while teaching a workshop about ceramic tile murals at Phoenix Fired Art. The mural consists of three panels that depict the process of bringing clay from its wet state to its final product, from in the ground to on the shelf! The left panel illustrates the beginning of the process: collecting clay. The center panel depicts individuals throwing pottery on the wheel, carving and decorating pottery, firing, glazing, and unloading the final product from the kiln. The right panel shows potters putting the final touches on their masterpieces and how their artwork is used when completed. Each panel is surrounded by small tiles created by community members and donors who made this piece of public art possible.
