The Miner Memorial & Four Nymph Statues

Title: The Miner Memorial and Four Nymph Statues

Artist: Piccini Stefano

Location: Spiva Park (4th and Main Streets)

Date Completed: 1966

Description: For nearly eight decades, the intersection of 4th Street and Main Street in Joplin served as a hub of activity for the city. However, when the buildings there fell into disrepair and decay, George A. Spiva purchased the land. A prominent businessman, philanthropist, and lover of the arts, Spiva transformed the property into a downtown park, complete with art the public could enjoy: a massive miner statue and four cast-iron nymphs surrounding a reflecting pool. The Miner Memorial Statue was sculpted by Italian artist Piccini Stefano and pays tribute to Joplin’s mining history. The Four Nymph Statues, which symbolize the four seasons, were imported from England.
