National Poetry Month

April 2022 marks the 26th annual celebration of poets and poetry. Launched by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month (NPM) reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Join the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, bloggers, and, of course, poets marking poetry’s important place in our culture and our lives. In 2016 Connect2Culture, Post Art Library, and Pub Hound Press began an intentional collective effort to celebrate NPM in Joplin and 2022 marks the 6th year of Joplin’s official celebration. NPM mainstays have been collected (such as Spiva’s 1,000 Words Event) and the committee has rounded out the lineup by adding new poetry-centric events (such as Open Mic Poetry Night). The number of organizations involved continues to grow. Take a look below for free poetry events available to you! To learn more about a specific event in this year’s lineup, click on the title.
