“Vents, Missives, and Fumaroles” by Shawn Bitters

January 18 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Multi-media artist Shawn Bitters brings volcanoes to Missouri Southern State University’s Spiva Art Gallery with his explosive solo exhibition Vents, Missives, and Fumaroles. A professor at the University of Kansas, Bitters works with drawing, painting, screen-printing, digital media, and sculpture to create volcanic landscapes that erupt with color, humor, and secrets codes. These works flip the script on fateful cataclysms, turning volcanic doom into joyful acts of re-creation, and plays with the compulsion of humanity to personify nature in order to support prevalent beliefs and social structures. The current work was inspired by field research in Iceland, Sicily, Japan, and a wide range of environments throughout the American West. Free and open to the public.
