Last week we brought the Joplin arts and cultural community together for the “Joplin Arts Preview” – the first of its kind, C2C hopes to make this an annual tradition! The premise was simple. Each arts/cultural representative had three minutes to update the community on their organizations activities and offerings for 2016–2017.

Do you teach art to kids? Need some pointers? Come learn and network with art educators from local schools and other organizations during Spiva’s first Visual Arts Education Summit. MSSU Assistant Professor Amber Mintert and Spiva Executive Director Josie Mai will facilitate this two-day professional development workshop, utilizing original art at Spiva Center for the Arts and George Washing Carver National Monument. Participants will learn to write a lesson plan for visual arts, integrate science and other core subjects into an art lesson, create exemplars of the lessons, and get handouts of resources from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education.
Celebrating the centennial of the National Park System, day one begins at Spiva Center for the Arts on September 23rd from 10am–3pm. Spiva’s Main Gallery exhibit, America’s Parks, will serve as the perfect backdrop for the seminar. The second session will take place on Saturday, September 24th from 10am–3pm at George Washington Carver National Monument. Cost is $25 per day, or $40 for both days. It’s back! Next week is ZERKAPALOOZA 2016 – August 19th & 20th! Get ready for two nights of music and a Saturday full of amusements for the entire family. The Main Stage is located at Memorial Hall (212 W 8th St). Zerkapalooza is a celebration of food, music, and people. Visit downtown businesses while enjoying all the activities planned at Memorial Hall. The main stage is located inside Memorial Hall, while Downtown venues (JBs Downtown, Whiskey Dicks, Blackthorn, and Old Broadway Club) will also host musical acts. The MSSU Choral Society will begin its fall rehearsals Monday, August 22, 7–9pm in room 208 of the Music Building at MSSU. The well-known area-wide community mixed choir is open to anyone college age and older and all singers are welcome. Registration forms will be available at the first two rehearsals only. The class fee is $30 for the semester.
The choir will be preparing for its annual Christmas concert in December. Selections will include “Jingle All the Way,” a humorous look at Christmas shopping, and possibly the most beautiful arrangement of “Silent Night” by Rhonda Polay. The featured work is “A Holiday to Remember” (A multi-traditional choral celebration) including annual favorites such as “Happy Holiday,” “White Christmas,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear.”
